Course objectives: The aim of the subject is to acquire the special vocabulary in engineering on an intermediate level. This course combines a specialist vocabulary, and it also develops general language skills which are necessary for the students to succeed in this area. The course contains topics that reflect the latest developments in the field making it immediately relevant to students’ needs. The course trains the students for the effective communication at work
Course contents: Machine Tools, Materials; Basic Issues of Electricity and Electronics, Technical Assistance, Technical Drawing; CAD; Automation and Robotics, How energy is produced; Health and Safety at Work Conversational skills: giving opinion, arguing, polite phrases, and public speaking – giving presentations. Reading skills: application of metacognitive reading strategies, reading different special texts, analyzing graphical information Writing skills: writing reports, essays, power point presentations Grammar skills: development of inflectional, derivational and compound morphology Listening: eliciting important information from authentic texts.
Knowledge:
The student will be able to apply the knowledge acquired, communicate in English on specific professional issues and use the language of mechanical engineering in a creative way. The ability to produce short, coherent, professional texts in written and oral form. Ability to understand longer, more complex technical texts. Ability to acquire knowledge independently.
The student knows the vocabulary and terms of the engineering profession in Hungarian and English. English language proficiency is sufficient for training, familiarisation with English-language literature, basic understanding and processing of technical texts, and the performance of professional tasks, as well as for continuous professional self-study.
The students will endeavour to read the English language literature in the field of mechanical engineering and to continuously improve your language skills and professional knowledge.
Communicate independently and use the foreign language in a variety of professional situations.
Mid-term study requirements:
Continuous assessment during the semester: The grades are obtained based on points acquired during the semester by completing the following tasks: active participation in the lesson, presentation on an engineering topic, vocabulary tests, writing an exam paper consisting of vocabulary and grammar tasks. Exam criteria: Students complete the course by acquiring at least 50% of the maximum number of points (100 points). The grades are awarded according to the Learning and Exam Regulations of the John von Neumann University.
