Course objectives

Purpose of teaching the subject : Genetics, biotechnology course provides a basic knowledge of genetics (subject and branches of genetics; cellular and molecular basis of heredity; elementary laws of heredity and deviations from Mendelian inheritance). The course also covers, gene and genome conservation, and plant biotechnology.

knowledge to be acquired: History of genetics. Reproduction, cell divisions, cell cycle. Cellular and molecular basics of inheritance. Mendelian genetics. Genetics Problems solving Genetics Problems solving practical lessons. Non-Mendelian inheritance. Genetics Problems solving practical lessons. Linkage and Gene mapping. Calculation of linkage. Lethal combinations and pleiotropy. Mutation and polyploidy. Inheritance of quantitative traits. Heritability (h2). Heterosis effect, inbreeding depression. Biodiversity, Gene banks, preservation of genetic material. Molecular biology in practice, PCR, gel electrophoresis Plant biotechnology in practice. Cell and Tissue Culture, in vitro cloning, in vitro haploid/ DH production. Pathogen elimination using tissue culture methods. Genetic transformation. GMO’s.

Mid-term study requirements

Intermediate learning requirements: - Attending practical lessons according to the regulation of the university. - Two midterm exams (50-50 points). At least 51% completion of midterm exams is required. - Retake of a midterm exam: during the 12th week of the study period - The course is completed with practical course grade based on the results of the two midterm exams (50+50 points): 90-100% excellent (5); 80-89% good (4); 66-79% satisfactory (3); 50-65% passing (2); 0 to 49% fail (1).
