Course objectives

The aim of the course is to introduce students to the fundamentals of IT, which are now essential for economic professionals. The course covers basic IT topics: the basics of information theory, operating systems, and an overview of basic office applications: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The IT fundamentals are concluded with relational database management systems and the basics of networking. During the software demonstrations, most of the functions of the softwares, commonly used by economists, will be presented in detail.

Lectures

- The concept and measurement of information, the definition of IT; - The creation of the computer, its basic components; - The function, tasks, and services of the operating system, today's operating systems; - Word I-II: menu structure, functions, and their usage; - PowerPoint I-II: menu structure, functions, and their usage; - Excel I-II: menu structure, functions, and their usage; - Fundamentals of relational database management: tables, relations, the concept of relations, data models, normal forms, data schemas, steps of database design; Steps and usage of data extraction; Relational database management usage I: demonstration of creating a relational database from design to implementation; Data querying, SQL; Relational database management usage II: ELT (Extraction, Transformation, and Load): data loading, data manipulation, and data extraction; Data storage optimization; Reporting; - Development of computer networks, data transmission media, channels, the OSI-ISO model of data transmission and its layers; Basics of computer network robustness; - Cloud systems and their typical services, market share.

Evaluation (final exam / seminar / other ): seminar. Additional (specific) methods to be used in knowledge testing (if any): 2 Mid-term exams (tests). A minimum score of 50% must be achieved in each mid-term exam. (30-30 points, minimum 15-15 points) Assignments in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and SQL. (20 points) Moodle e-learning course with final quizzes. (10 points) Review tests (10 points)

Generative AI usage

1st position: Use of GAI tools is not permitted for solving assignments. This means GAI tools cannot be used to complete formative or summative assessments, and using GAI constitutes academic misconduct. The use of AI tools for spelling and grammar checking does not fall under this prohibition.
