Course objectives

The aim of the lesson is to familiarize students with the basic conceptual system, operational structure and management issues of value-creating processes of companies (production, service, logistics and supply chain). It discusses the importance, and methods of process management, as well as process development techniques. The course discusses the processes of internal operations of companies and cooperation between companies, thus examining to what extent and in what ways they can contribute to maintaining and strengthening corporate competitiveness.

Course content
Lectures

1. Concept and structure of customer value. Differentiation and separation of value-creating and supporting processes. 2. Own and outsourced processes and functions (Insourcing/outsourcing, make or buy). 3. The concept of process and the importance of the process approach. Process types. Process hierarchy - process levels, concept of basic (core) and sub-processes, process characteristics and how to define them. 4. Development in corporate operations: radical and/or incremental. Types of process development: Business Process Redesign (BPR) or Continuous Process Improvement (CPI). Concept and tools of continuous improvement (Kaizen). Problem and failure detection, data collection tools and methods. 5. Documenting and visualization of processes I.: methods; II.: ARIS, ViFlow, Mega, Visio, MsExcel. 6. Process characteristics: capacities, cycle time, bottlenecks, balance. Differences between linear and parallel processes. 7. Just-In-Time (JIT) value-creating process game in student groups: forming groups, developing sequential process steps, satisfying customer orders using Kan-ban cards; performance evaluation and process development over several cycles, summarizing and jointly evaluating experiences. 8. Statistical tools for process analysis and development: Statistical process control (SPC), quality capability, quality control card, Failure Detection and Effect Analysis (FMEA), 6 sigma. Lean management basics and typical methods, VSM (Value Stream Map, Value Stream Analysis). 9. Process simulation: Modeling the process operated during the JIT value-creating process game (during the previous lesson) digitally, using software. Jointly developing the process using digital techniques. Performance evaluation and process development over several cycles, summarizing experiences and jointly evaluating them. 10. Production: production systems and their characteristics, production success criteria. 12. Service: service process characteristics, service sectors, characteristics, service development and qualification. 13. Logistics: Inventory management and transportation. Transportation modes and their characteristics, performance dimensions.

- Possesses knowledge of the basic, comprehensive concepts, theories, facts, national economic and international connections of economics, relevant economic actors, functions and processes. - Knows and understands the principles and methods of managing, organizing and operating business processes, the methodology of analyzing business processes, the methodological foundations of decision-making and decision support. - Is aware of the operation of organizations and the use of IT and office technology tools supporting business processes.

Skills

Able to determine the complex consequences of economic processes and organizational events. - Able to apply the techniques of solving economic problems, problem-solving methods, taking into account their application conditions and limitations. - Able to manage a small and medium-sized enterprise or an organizational unit in a business organization after acquiring practical knowledge and experience.

Mode of assessment (coll. / pract. grade. / other): grades (1-5), exam Additional (specific) methods to be used in knowledge testing (if any): - SIPOC documentation of a selected process of middle complexity - Improvement of the documented process with CPI and BPR methods The deadline for assignments is always one week, it is the start time of the next class, as a .pdf file uploaded to the Neptun system (they are only evaluated at the end of the semester). The assignments represent 20% of the course completion.

Exam requirements

Average of the written exams at least 50%.

Generative AI usage

2nd position: Use of GAI tools is permitted in a limited manner (e.g., for literature search support or specific tools). In this case, the course instructor is responsible for defining where and how GAI tools may be used in assignments. The course description must specify in detail how GAI tools may be used during the course.
